The cycling route follows the Old Maniototo rail line, with its easy gradient, from Clyde in central Otago to Middlemarch. Our Otago Central Rail Trail cycling tour ends with one of the world's great train trips as we travel on the spectacular Taieri Gorge railway into Dunedin.
The Otago Central Rail Trail trip is not just about the cycling but rather exploring the many small towns and abandoned gold diggings, meeting local inhabitants and enjoying some family friendly activities, including the ancient art of curling (bowls on ice).

- Start in Christchurch or Queenstown, finish in Dunedin or Christchurch
- 3-4 days of cycling on the 150kms of Rail Trail, (note - we recommend a four day trail cycling experience for younger children)
- Enjoy curling (bowls on ice), a high country farm visit or a visit to a Maniototo 70's fashion & stuffed animals museum (seriously)!
- Take a journey on the 2 hour 'not to be missed' train ride through the lower Taieri Gorge with its spectacular viaducts and bridges and tunnels
- Get your fill of sweet things at Cadbury's Chocolate factory and climb the steepest street in the World in Dunedin - the Scotland of the South
- Visit world famous Fleurs Place in Moeraki for a coffee and take a walk along the beach and explore the unusual Moeraki Boulders
- Spend a night in Victorian Oamaru, enjoy a living history street theatre performance
- Watch the Blue Penguins, the world's smallest penguins come ashore
