Dune trails

The Motu Trails are centered around the pre-European Māori trails and historic Old Motu Coach Road route, which until the mid-20th century, were the only overland routes between the Bay of Plenty and Poverty Bay. The area is steeped in Maori history stemming back to some of the earliest arrivals of Maori to Aotearoa New Zealand in 1200 AD when the first of many waka / canoe arrived along the coastline of the Bay of Plenty to this luscious and food-laden land.

The Old Motu Coach Road”, the original coach road through Motu and Toa Toa (the valley of the clouds), is an unforgettable experience as it travels downhill from the village of Motu to the sea. The rewards are many with wonderful views and the sense of passing back in time and travelling over what was at one time a major New Zealand highway. The trail then continues along a new coastal cycleway with spectacular views over the Pacific Ocean.

The early Māori and European history of the region and the immense scenic attraction of the coastal, bush and hill country environments make this a trip to remember.
