The cycling route is 150 km/93 miles long and follows the old Otago Central railway line from Clyde to Middlemarch, but these tours are about much more than just cycling. Rail Trail Gold is a very suitable name, as it sums up the luxurious accommodations, describes the spectacular colours on summer apricots and autumn trees, while the remnants & ghosts of the gold mining past are constantly with you.
We run these tours on demand and can offer options for groups ranging from two people upwards. Our standard guided Otago Rail Trail Gold tour is five days long, starting from Queenstown and finishing in Dunedin, but we can make this a longer tour, or start & finish in Christchurch if required. The guided tour has many additional activities including;
- Travel from Queenstown to Dunedin, or start or finish in Christchurch

- Bike all or parts of the rail trail from Clyde to Middlemarch

- Learn about Merino farming on a back country farm tour
- Visit an amazing 70’s “fashion & stuffed animal” museum on a local farm
- Check out an historic engineering museum
- Take walk or swim at the beautiful St Bathans Lake & enjoy a cold beer with the locals at the historic Vulcan Hotel
- Visit a high country farm and see a sheep yard made entirely out of the local schist stone
- Travel on an historic train through the spectacular Taieri Gorge

Note – this tour is fully supported & guided, you will have your own personal vehicle & expert guide/bike mechanic. You will get transported to and from the rail trail each day and have plenty of time for exploration and relaxation in each of the exciting areas you stay.
